Wedgwood traces its history to 1759. Josiah Wedgwood, the founder of the company, worked in a pottery shop for years. His father was a social activist, and the Wedgwood factory was one of the first in the UK. The firm's descendants included naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958).

The company began making the world's finest glassware more than 200 years ago. The Penrose brothers, known for their uncompromising approach, soon created a worldwide reputation for exclusive tableware. Since then, Waterford Wedgwood has faced severe cuts and layoffs, closing its Dungarvan factory and consolidating its operations into its Kilbarry factory. Initially, the Kilbarry factory employed more than 1,000 people. Further job cuts whittled its staffing down to less than 100. In the same way, Royal Doulton has faced job cuts over the years, but its current production facility is more than capable of making its most exquisite pieces.

In 1765, Wedgwood was invited to provide a tea service for Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III. She was impressed and applauded the designs, which made them known as Queens Ware. This acclaim helped Wedgwood gain popularity across Europe. Nowadays, Queens Ware is highly collectible and surprisingly affordable. So, whether you're planning to purchase a piece or a whole set, you'll have to know where to look.
