If you're in the Greenwich area of London, you've probably heard of Maritime Greenwich, the architectural and cultural hub of the city. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, this area is an internationally recognized World Heritage Site. So what is Old Royal Naval College? and why is it so special? Let's answer these questions and learn more about this historic institution. You'll be glad you read this article.
The Painted Hall is one of the highlights of the Old Royal Naval College, which occupies King William's Block. This beautiful structure was designed by James Thornhill and has two large halls adorned with rich painting. Despite its age, the Painted Hall is still in excellent condition and has several exhibits dedicated to the great Admiral. Visitors will also be able to admire the coffin of Admiral Lord Nelson.
The Painted Hall, which is part of the College, is a wonderful place to visit with the entire family. The Painted Hall is 4000 square metres of baroque art. If you'd prefer to spend less time there, you can explore the Painted Hall's galleries. Alternatively, if you're unsure about what to expect, you can check out the website for a virtual tour or an audio-described introduction for the visually impaired.
While visiting the Painted Hall, you should also check out the chapel. It was completed in 1752 and later burned down by fire. The Chapel was then rebuilt by architect James 'Athenian' Stuart, and it features a stunning ceiling and marble floor. A neoclassical Chapel of St Peter and St Paul is also in the campus. You can even visit its famous organ. It's definitely worth the short trip to Old Royal Naval College.
