If you're interested in traveling by train in the United Kingdom, you may have heard of Virgin Trains. The train operating company was a joint venture between the Virgin Rail Group and Stagecoach. It operated the InterCity West Coast franchise from 1997 until 2019.

While there's some confusion over the website, the changes are mostly minor. Virgin's booking system still redirects to LNER, which is another train operator. This means that those looking to book a train using the Virgin website will be diverted to LNER's website. While this shows that the train company isn't planning to leave rail anytime soon, it may confuse travellers who travel on a regular basis. Virgin's WC dispute with the DfT hasn't gone away, but it won't let brand loyalty die.

Virgin Trains West Coast service started with the same old trains but then added a new launch locomotive, called Mission Impossible, in 2015. The company also promised a tilting train, the Pendolino, that would be capable of traveling at 140mph. However, a botched upgrade of the West Coast Main Line meant the Pendolino didn't make it. The train has been limited to 125mph but it still attracts three times as many passengers than it did at the start of the franchise.

After a year of running the company, the HS2 bid process was thrown up a curveball. The government's decision to award the West Coast rail franchise to Virgin was a surprise to the public. After all, it's the same train that operates the two companies in the West Midlands. But there's a catch. It's too late to take the chance on a mediocre train operator.
