Sample Report

In order for you to understand what you are getting before you actually go ahead with the purchase, there is a sample buyers report available to view. The sample will feature the registration plate number of the car you are intending to buy, and then the report is broken down into the following sections: Alerts; Vehicle Description; Breakdown Reasons; MOT Failures; Vehicle Valuation; Running Costs; What Car? Advice; Buying Checklists.

The alerts are very clearly shown, and cover things like outstanding finance for the car, whether it has been imported or exported, whether there have been any registration plate changes, whether the colour of the car has been changed, whether it has previously been stolen, written off, or even scrapped, and any mileage discrepancies, among other things. If no alerts come up, this will clearly state All Clear on your buyer’s report. This is ideally what you want to be seeing, but donrsquo;t be disheartened if this is not the case, as there may be a reasonable reason. Just make sure you delve into any of the alerts as much as possible to ensure you are satisfied with the responses before you go ahead with the purchase. More details are provided for each of the alerts in the following section.

The Vehicle Description section will include the vehicle identification number, which you can then validate with the car. You will also have details of the type of fuel required; the date the car was first registered; the body type, including the shape of the vehicle; the unique engine reference number; whether the car is manual or automatic; the CO2 emmissions produced by the car, along with a CO2 rating; and the engine power. Make sure you check each one of these against what you know to be true about the car before continuing with your purchase.

The Vehicle History section details previous records of mileage; the number of previous owners; how many times the car has changed colour; how many times the car has changed registration plates; details if the car has been imported or exported; and details of any previous history of the car being scrapped. A scrapped car should no longer exist, so you are advised not to buy the car if this record is shown.

Common Breakdown Reasons could include problems with the ignition system, such as high temperature readings, or a contaminated coolant; air conditioning and heating system problems, such as coolant leaks, excessive wear and cracks; and other problems may be listed. In addition to advising what the common breakdown reasons are, it will also advise what to look out for in the car to help you identify cars which may potentially be subjected to these issues.

The MOT Failure reasons are listed in a similar way. You will be provided with a description of what the MOT failure is, and then you will be given a list of things to look out for to help you identify whether this particular vehicle is likely to give you problems or not.

The section you will be waiting for with baited breath is the vehicle valuation. This will give you two different prices - the private sale price, and the dealer price. Obviously, if you are buying the car through a private sale, you can usually expect to pay a little less than if you buy through a dealer, and the average price difference will be reflected in the two figures provided. The reason dealer prices are higher is that they include the business costs, such as marketing, premises, staff, and other essential business requirements.

You do not have to stick to the price you are quoted, and more often than not, there will be room to negotiate on the price - particularly if you find any failings with the particular car you are intending to buy. Rather than leave the negotiating part completely to you, RAC will even provide you with a few tips for successully negotiating a price that suits you both. The tips inculde things like finding similar cars in the area that are selling for less and using this as a bartering tool, or starting at your best price, and being prepared to settle for something that is in the middle of the two figures. Make sure that you take the car out for a test drive and look out for anything that may be a fault. This can also be used as a bartering tool.

When you are considering the price of a car, you should also take into account the running costs, as this will affect your budget. If you get a great deal on a car, but find yourself paying a fortune for the running costs, then you would have to question whether the deal was as good as you first thought. The section of the report dedicated to running costs looks at the tax, fuel consumption, typical service cost, and insurance group, so you can have an idea about how much you are likely to spend running the car.

The What Car? Advice is worth a thorough read before you go ahead with the purchase of the car. This gives you a complete independent look at the car, and includes a summary, rating, pros and cons, whether it is a preferred model or least preferred model, and some top tips. These highlight points are then followed by a detailed review. This section could help you make your decision about whether the car is for you or not, and is very valuable information for those buying a car make and model that they have no personal experience of driving.

Finally, in order to help you through the purchase, a buyers checklist is provided at the end of the report. Follow each of the points carefully to make sure that you have tested and checked the car thoroughly.
