The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a charity dedicated to conservation, education, and animal welfare. Its London Zoo preserves the best possible living conditions for animals while giving priority to species that are endangered in the wild. Its other missions include a distinguished education programme and field conservation programs in Britain and abroad. In addition, it has an increasing role as a research centre. ZSL's scientific research department is one of the world's largest and most respected zoos. Its mission is to conserve species and their habitats and regularly publishes reports detailing its research findings. It received a grade of 4 in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 1997-2001. While the Institute has a long history and a diverse research program, the latest report covers their most recent accomplishments in these fields. In the past, ZSL was affiliated with the University of London, but in 2000, it replaced this affiliation with the University of Cambridge.
Zoos are notorious for being terrible places for animals. ZSL is one of the few zoos that prides itself on providing the highest level of care and funding for its animals. But sadly, the organization is having financial difficulties right now. While Easter should be peak season for visiting zoos, the covid outbreak has stopped normal life and has forced them to shut down operations. It is difficult to maintain a zoo when staff and visitors are being furloughed.
