Store's Description
A proper pond care regimen is necessary to prevent the buildup of organic matter. Dead plants, animal waste, and fertilizer runoff accumulate in ponds over time, reducing oxygen levels and contributing to algae growth. The presence of algae can pose a health risk to fish and other wildlife. Biodegradable bacteria packs can help to maintain a healthy pond. Make sure to choose a product that has been approved by a veterinarian.
If the temperature in your pond is 75 degrees Fahrenheit or more, the water is likely to be devoid of dissolved oxygen. In these extreme temperatures, aquatic plants can help keep the water cooler, and aerators can be installed to maintain an appropriate level of dissolved oxygen. Keeping fish hydrated is another important aspect of pond care. Adding shaded areas around the pond can help to maintain the temperature of the water.
Regular thinning of aquatic plants is easier in the fall than during winter because the plants are concentrating all their energy on root systems. Moreover, it is a good idea to fertilize potted plants once in a while to keep them healthy. In the spring, you can plant frost-sensitive tropical plants and water lilies. Just make sure to replant them when the cold weather threat is over. The water temperature should be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit before adding marsh plants. These plants help keep algae under control.
The main problem with algae in ponds is ropy filamentous algae. Duckweed is another common pond problem. The best way to control these problem plants is to limit fertilizer application. Ideally, fertilizer shouldn't be used on the pond watershed (the 40 to 50-foot area surrounding the pond). You can also check your neighbors' lands for fertilizers. Lastly, you should remove dead plants to prevent the formation of toxins in the water.
