If you are buying a bike and want to save some money, the best advice is not to go for the cheapest bike that you can find online. This is a mistake. Cheap bikes can be difficult to put together and can fall apart very easily, so before you know it, your money is wasted.

Online Auction Websites

One of the best places to buy a great value bike from is an auction website. Like cars, and mobile phones, bikes quickly devalue once they leave the shop, as new models are being released all the time. That doesn’t mean to say that there is anything wrong with the old model – it is just not as desirable as there are better ones out there. That’s why a little research can get you a great bargain on a bike that could serve you well for years.

For example, we found the following on Ebay:

Vitus Vee City Bike – usually £200-£300 at Chain Reaction Cycles. This bike gets great reviews online from other users – with a score of 4.9 out of 5. It went on Ebay for just £50 (auction now ended). Granted, it needed a few repairs, but nothing major.

There are plenty of options for under £50 on Ebay and other auction websites. Make sure you select “Auction”, and to save money on postage costs, reduce the search area to a radius of 25 miles around you, making the bike easy to collect – even if you don’t have a car. You can cycle back!

Buyer Beware

Beware though – there are some bikes that are available to buy immediately that you can actually buy in shops cheaper.

We found this bike on Ebay: Apollo Men’s Mountain Bike

This is actually available in Halfords for £94.99 – which is cheaper than the Ebay advert.

Just use a little common sense and do a bit of research before you place your bid.

Buying a Brand New Bike

If you are determined to go for a brand new bike, then look out for the sales. Websites like Chain Reaction Cycles offer incredible discounts at sale time, and they also advertise voucher codes on their website when they become available.

Sign up to Mailing Lists

One of the best ways to stay on top of the latest bargains is to sign up for mailing lists for various cycle stores. You will then be the first to know when a sale begins, and when a new voucher code is issued.
